Setting: The main setting for 12 years a slave is in eastern America (New York, Washington and the countryside where he is a slave). In the trailer we mainly see him being a slave but we do see glimpses of him in the main cities playing the violin.
Props: One of the main props which we see through out the trailer is the violin in which he plays. he plays it when he is in the city and when he is a slave. Other props include farming equipment and tools.
Costumes: We see the main character wear two totally different types of clothing. When he was in the city we see him wear suit/ smart clothing but when he became a slave that soon changed and so he wore dirty overalls.
Sounds: There is both diegetic and non diegetic sound in the trailer. We hear background music but this is only herd towards the end of the trailer. as his voice increase in sound the music also increase to make the audience feel sorry for him and be on his side. We also hear other characters singing when doing their slavery work to occupy themselves.
Representation: The way that the main character is represented suggests that he is fighting for black people to have rights and that only way this is going to happen is by him and so he comes across brave and powerful.
